The Psychedelic Furs with The Call at Sandstone Amphitheater, Bonner Springs, KS, August 14, 1987

From London’s Psychedelic Furs‘ fifth studio album Midnight to Midnight, the band ventured around the world for their most successful tour to date. The new album featured the title track single which would become the band’s biggest hit to that point.
Lead singer Richard Butler’s raspy voice was the group’s trademark, along with their new wave/post-punk vibe which was received tenfold with their debut LP in 1980. Songs such as “Sister Europe” and “India” shot them into a pop rock spotlight they may not have expected.
As soon as the Butler brothers hit the stage with their band, fans forgot about the temps on this hot midwestern evening, and settled into the music. We all relished in the hits “Love My Way,” “The Ghost in You,” and “Pretty in Pink,” made extra famous by the John Hughes film a year earlier.
The Furs were at the top of their game in ’87, and continued to earn fans and sell records in the coming years. While the band was on hiatus in the early nineties, Butler would form the side project, Love Spit Love, releasing a couple nice albums.
Openers The Call, hailing from Santa Cruz, California, were headliners in their own right. Touring in support of their latest Into the Woods, Michael Been’s band put on a helluva show. With a catalogue of hits, the group did not disappoint with such gems as “The Walls Came Down,” “I Still Believe (Great Design),” and “Everywhere I Go.”
Sadly, Been would leave this mortal coil in 2010 touring with his son’s band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Yet, the Call lives on in the hearts and minds of fans.
